The future belongs to products that can preserve context

A business does not need every app to know everything. It needs decisions to retain their meaning across boundaries.

⌁FUTURE OF PRODUCTS · HN / 25

A modern organization operates across bookings, payments, customer communication, contracts, licensing and analytics. These systems do not share the same purpose, and they should not share unrestricted access to one enormous database. Yet customers experience the organization as one relationship. When a payment fails, a support conversation begins, a refund is approved and a report is produced, context often disappears between the steps. People repeat information that the business should already understand.

02 / PERSPECTIVE

The answer is not to collapse everything into one application. It is to create context that can travel safely: stable identifiers, meaningful events, authorized relationships, clear ownership and definitions that survive integration. A notification should know that it concerns a verified payment without seeing every financial detail. A customer portal should show the state of a license without owning the licensing engine's rules. An analyst should understand net revenue consistently across products while respecting tenant boundaries.

03 / PERSPECTIVE

AI raises the stakes. An agent can orchestrate actions across services, but only if the context it receives is accurate, complete enough and authorized. More model memory is not automatically better context. Unbounded context may mix customers, expose secrets and bury important policy. Systems should carry exactly the information needed for the task, with provenance and expiry. Knowing when information must not cross a boundary is part of intelligence.

04 / PERSPECTIVE

The most valuable product ecosystems may be those that coordinate without erasing distinctions. Each application can focus on its domain, share dependable capabilities and communicate through contracts that make the state of the business understandable. Contextual continuity means the organization remembers what matters, while the customer retains control over what should be forgotten. This is more demanding than building a single impressive interface—and more durable.
